Applied ecology research group

Location: Roma
Head: Prof. Stefano CATAUDELLA
Research themes :
Major research themes, in particular those linked to diadromous fish species, concern a number of aspects of diadromous fish biology, both basic and applied. Our interest is focused primarily on eurhyaline finfish species interesting in the framework of an ecologically oriented coastal zone management and for aquaculture (mullets, eel, sea bass, sea bream), and diadromous species in estuarine and freshwater habitats (eel, sturgeon, mullets) as targets of anthropogenic impacts.

Annual budget: 250 000 €/year of external funding (period)

Laboratory of Experimental Ecology and Aquaculture
an ancient farm completely restored, with labs and aquaculture facilities: an experimental FW hatchery rearing tanks, mesocosms and ponds, all connected by a lagunage system

Permanent “observatory” on the Tiber riverBy an agreement with the fishermen cooperatives on the low Tiber river course, a permanent “observatory” has been set up consisting of all the fishery facilities (floating barges, boats, fishing equipments), that the team can use as a basis of all field work on the river. Here the monitoring of eel recruitment is carried out, as well as the riverine fish assemblage surveys and biomonitoring programs.

Pontinian coastal lakes – Circeo National Park By a research convention with the Circeo National Park, our research team avails itself of the possibility to carry out field activities on lagoonal systems. The lagoon complex of the Circeo National Park (a Ramsar site) consists of three lagoons of varying sizes and morphology, where fishing is carried out at the “lavoriero” within the tidal channel, and an experimental hatchery using mesocosm techniques.

North Adriatic Sea – Valle Figheri The research team has an agreement with a private owner of a “valle” in the Lagoon of Venice, where research activities are carried out. The valle consists of a managed coastal lagoon of 450 ha, where commercial fisheries are carried out, and a productive scale hatchery where juveniles for restocking are reared using the mesocosm technology.
