The Fisheries Research Services Freshwater Laboratory
is responsible for monitoring migratory and freshwater fish populations in Scotland. It conducts research in support of scientific advice provided to the Scottish Executive and others, at both national and international levels, in order to help protect fish and manage fisheries.

  • Research is currently focused on:
    • intra- and interspecific interactions among freshwater fishes;
    • the development of new fish population assessment methods and models;
    • biodiversity of indigenous fishes;
    • the impacts of biotic (e.g. predators, introduction of exotic species) and abiotic (water abstraction, pollution, land use, climate change) pressures on fish stocks;
    • impacts of fish farming and high seas fishery by-catch on migratory fish stocks;
    • the development of habitat and stock restoration techniques.

The FRS Freshwater Programme is staffed by 48 scientists and administrators. We have expertise in population dynamics, modelling, genetics, fish and aquatic invertebrate ecology, water chemistry and GIS. We collaborate closely with colleagues at the FRS Marine Laboratory in Aberdeen on many issues. Work is based at the Freshwater Laboratory in Faskally and at ancillary field stations in Deeside, Montrose (Angus), Aberdeen, Shieldaig (Wester Ross) and Perth. At Almondbank, Perth, we have fish hatching and rearing facilities and an 80 m artificial stream that allows us to study the impacts of factors such as flow and water depth, food and shelter, competition and predation on territory use in fish.

We collaborate extensively with the research community in Scotland and with scientists in Europe and North America.
