Laboratory research description

French institute for engineering research in agriculture and environment (Cemagref)

Status : Governmental research institute (depends from Ministry of Research and Ministry of Agriculture)

http://www.cemagref.fr/

Two research units are interested in Diadfish:

  • Inland Aquatic Living Resources (RAC)
  • Complex Systems Engineering lab (LISC)

RAC unit is also part of a cooperative technological research team with the Fisheries head council (CSP) and Electricité de France.

Inland Aquatic Living Resources research unit

Location: Cestas (suburb of Bordeaux) and Toulouse
Head: Paul GONTHIER
2 research themes :
- diadromous population (ecology, dynamics, management, conservation)
- estuarine ecology (researchers of this thematic are not mentioned here)

Annual budget: (diadromous fish): 790 000 €/year of external funding (average 1998-2002)

Technician staff : 8 (2 of them on the vessel), 2 administrative agents.

Specialist facilities

  • one research vessel “L’ESTURIAL”(Royan). Trawler designed for operating in estuaries and coastal waters
  • one experimental facilities « CREA » (St Seurin sur l'Isle) facility fully equipped for short and long term experiments on diadromous species (fresh, brackish, marine waters available). Experiments concerns conservation of endangered species (artificial breeding and rearing), test of methods (tagging and ageing) and behavior observation.
  • one Fishway technological hall (Toulouse)
